Thinking Quickly

Blink by Malcolm Gladwell discusses “Thin slicing” as a way of how we think quickly, instinctively.  In situations that happen very quickly there is no chance to understand or anticipate what is happening.  Gavin de Becker stated: “When you remove time you are subject to the lowest-quality intuitive reaction.”  Gladwell refers to this lack of judgmental ability as mind-blind autism.   When playing craps, the dice are moved quickly by the stick person to the shooter because they want to keep the game moving.  The casino does not want you to have time to think about what you are witnessing at the table.  They do not want you to be able to process the information your mind is receiving.  But, you can teach your mind to slow down what it is seeing and act accordingly.  This is why people who analyze craps methods on computer generated runs or at computer games cannot accurately predict what is happening live - - at a live table you have considerably less time to make a decision, bet or not bet, press or remove bets, etc.
