PRACTICE DOES NOT MAKE PERFECT

PRACTICE DOES NOT MAKE PERFECT.  PRACTICE ONLY MAKES PERMANENT OR HABIT.

PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

A few years ago I was fortunate to hear Joe Montana speak at an event in Phoenix.  During Joe’s presentation he said that when he played for the 49ers they did not practice until they got it right, they practiced until they did not get it wrong.  It is probably why he won so many Super Bowl rings.  The point I am trying to make is that it takes a lot of time and effort to be successful playing craps and to win consistently.

Malcolm Gladwell (author of Tipping Point, Blink & Outliers) says that it takes 10,000 hours to master a trade or skill.  In Outliers, Gladwell quoted Daniel Levitin stating:  “In study after study, of composers, basketball players, fiction writers, ice skaters, concert pianist, chess players, what he found is they all put in a lot of time and effort (more than 10,000 hours) to master their skills and trade.  Thus, 10,000 hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class-expert - - in anything

As an example, NFL players do not just show up on Sunday, they practice during the week.  In addition to practicing they watch hours and hours and hours and hours of film.  So if you want to be successful playing craps you must put in the time and effort to understand the game.
